First off, big thanks to FannBlade and a few others who've inspired me to do the conversion. I bought this 3 in 1 a few years ago on sale from Grizzly, $1500 iirc, and taught myself the basics of machining and turning. Since then read a lot of books on the subject and lurked here a fair bit. The general rule of thumb for the 3-in-1 machines is to avoid them like a hemoroid. I think some of the Emco (not Enco) machines might be good, but I can't say too much good about the Asian machines. You might be able to find some machines used, but I would reset your budget to mybe $2,000 and try to buy a used lathe and a used mill.
The lathe tends to be bigger because it is the base, and it's CS is the mill's table. So you get a decent lathe, but the mill is a joke. I ran into a really good deal on a solid old 10x24 Atlas lathe so I picked up that instead of the 9x20. I did get the X3 mill and I'm really happy with it.
