Vapor–liquid equilibrium - Wikipedia

The mole fraction of a given component of a mixture in a particular phase (either the vapor or the liquid phase) is the number of moles of that component in that phase divided by the total number of moles of all components in that phase. Binary mixtures are those having two components. Three-component mixtures are called ternary mixtures.

1.2 BINARY VLE PHASE DIAGRAMS Two types of vapor–liquid equilibrium diagrams are widely used to represent data for two-component (binary) systems. The first is a "temperature versus x and y" diagram (Txy). The x term represents the liquid composition, usually expressed in terms of mole fraction. The y term represents the vapor composition.

2. Construct a phase diagram using temperature versus mole percent composition. In the present case, there will be two compositions plotted at each equilibrium boiling temperature- one for the liquid phase and one for the vapor phase. Construct this one, single phase diagram by combining the results from both set of runs on one diagram.

Raoult's Law: Binary Liquid-Vapor Phase Diagrams: A Simple ...

A new physical chemistry laboratory experiment illustrating Raoult's law behavior of ideal solutions is described. The vapor composition of binary mixtures of a ketone and an aromatic solvent is measured spectrophotometrically and the results used to generate Raoult's law vapor pressure plots and binary liquid-vapor phase diagrams. The method is more straightforward …

It represents a binary mixture, and all compositions are expressed as mole fractions of the more volatile component; x in the liquid phase or y in the vapor phase. (The less volatile component is thus 1-x and 1- y.) For a given temperature and composition, this diagram tells us the nature and composition of each phase of the mixture that is ...
