Some coal mines have Jameson cells in operation, some are having Jameson cells installed and others are considering to use Jameson cells in their flotation circuits. As an example, the application of Jameson cells in Newlands Coal Mine is described and the performance of the Jameson Cell is summarized.
Coarse flotation (Concorde Cell) Jameson, 23 (2010), Miner. Eng. Fine and Coarse flotation (OGC) Relatively isotropic and homogeneous turbulence. Variable energy dissipation rate (0.5– 5 kW/m3) Generate small bubble sizes (0.13- 0.83 mm) Safari et al., 150, 2020.
When the feed contains liberated, fast floating mineral particles, the Jameson Cell produces final grade product reducing the number of cells required for downstream processing. The recovery in one Jameson Cell is usually equivalent to several mechanical cells. Pre-cleaning (scalping) duties where the Jameson Cell recovers the fast floating minerals …
Two-stage flotation with the columns could produce a concentrate that was up to 70.2% Fe at 87.5% iron recovery, compared to 70.4% Fe at only 77.7% iron recovery for four stages of flotation in conventional cells. It was shown to be particularly important to operate the columns to recover a maximum of the quartz gangue into the froth.
Jet flotation, also referred to Jameson cell technology, involves the generation of small bubbles through high mixing, leading to faster recovery. Compared with other flotation methods, dispersed ozone flotation is a little bit different because the air commonly used to generate bubbles is replaced by ozone.
The installation of Jameson Cells in MIM's copper concentrator in 2002 has allowed a detailed investigation of Jameson Cell fundamentals to be conducted within a mineral flotation system.
The Jameson Cell consistently produces fine bubbles and intense mixing between air and slurry. This means fast, efficient flotation. While the principle of using air bubbles to recover particles is the basis of the technology, it is the way air bubbles are generated and how the bubbles and particles interact that make Jameson Cells unique.

The Jameson Cell is a high intensity flotation cell in which pulp and air are brought together in a co-current descending flow in a vertical tube called the downcomer. The pulp is introduced into the downcomer through a slurry lens orifice to produce a high velocity jet that generates violent mixing and fine bubble size.
Since Jameson Cell flotation technology was first installed in a coal flotation application in 1988/89 at Newlands Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP) there have been fundamental improvements to its design which has led to its current status as the leading technology in Australia for fine coal flotation. These improvements, which include key hardware …
Research work is currently under way to improve the understanding and performance of commercial flotation cells. Currently, flotation-cell design is primarily a proprietary function of the various cell manufacturers. ... His work in the 1980's, pioneering a new way to help the mining industry extract fine particles led to the development of the Jameson Cell. Today there are more than 250 Jameson Cells in operation ...
the cell. Many cells also employ a beveled edge along the bottom of the cell. This forces particles towards the rotor, and prevents the buildup of sediment on the cell floor. Column flotation cells have a high height-to-diameter ratio, as shown in Figure 2 on the following page.
The Jameson Cell is a radically different flotation device that changed the way that minerals were recovered and earned Jameson almost legendary status in mining and engineering circles. With cells now in operation across more than 25 countries, it is being used for copper, coal, zinc, nickel, lead, silver and platinum extraction worldwide.
Three factors were measured in the flotation process of copper ore: the copper grade in a concentrate (β), the copper grade in tailings (ϑ), and the recovery of copper in a concentrate (ε). The experiment was conducted by means of a Jameson cell. The factors influencing the quality of the process were the particle size (d), the flotation time (t), the type …

Glencore Mount Isa Mines refurbished their existing flotation cells and associated equipment within the Copper Concentrator during 2015 and 2016. The plant was more than 40+ years old and the refurbishment was targeted to allow the concen-trator to operate at a high levels of reliability and availability for the remaining life of the mine.

The latest, Mark IV Jameson Cell, combines the original advantages of small bubble size and small footprint with the new low maintenance and operator-friendly designs. The Jameson Cell is an innovative flotation process driven by fluid mechanics. The advantages of modern Jameson Cells are: B6000/20 (Mark IV) Jameson Cell at Lake Vermont, Australia.
The Jameson flotation cell is widely known to be efficient at fine coal recovery. However, it may be inefficient if the design parameters are not changed along with the difference in mineral floatability and working environment. In this paper, a pilot-scale Jameson Cell was modified for improving flotation separation of spodumene in high ...
The Jameson Cell is an innovative flotation process driven by fluid mechanics. The advantages of modern Jameson Cells are: consistent fine bubble generation with no external equipment or spargers; intense mixing with small bubbles achieving rapid flotation without mechanical agitation; high throughput in a small footprint
The test programmes have covered a wide array of ores – Gold, Silver, PGM's, and base metals and at various levels of complexity with respect to operating conditions including CPS, flotation of UFG products and locked cycle testing. Core Group is also equipped with a number of Jameson Cells for laboratory or on site pilot testing.
